Search Bell County Marriage and Divorce Records

Two offices hold the records when a marriage starts or a marriage ends in Bell County. The County Clerk issues marriage licenses and keeps the recorded vital documents. Divorce is a court matter, so those files sit with the district courts. People who want to search Bell County marriage records, or look up a divorce case, can start online and then turn to the right office for a certified copy. The path is not the same for each one. A license follows one track. A divorce decree follows another. Knowing which office holds your record saves a wasted trip and a wasted fee.

Getting a Marriage License in Bell County

The Bell County Clerk, Shelley Coston, issues every marriage license in the county. The first step is not a visit. You must fill out the online marriage application to get a transaction number, and you bring that number to the clerk. The online form is not mobile friendly, so use a desktop or laptop with a current browser. JavaScript has to be on. If the online step gives you trouble, public terminals are set up at the Belton office to help.

Both people must be at least 18. Each one needs a non-expired photo ID. A driver license, a military ID, a passport, or a state ID all work. A foreign passport must hold a visa, and a Matricula Consular cannot be used. Foreign birth certificates need a certified translation. Texas adds a 72-hour wait after the license is issued before you can marry. The license then expires 90 days after it is issued, so do not apply too early.

The County Clerk marriage page lays out the ID rules, the locations, and the online application link in one place.

How to Apply for a Bell County Marriage License

The process moves fast once both people show up with the right papers. Do the online step first. Get your transaction number. Then pick a location and plan to arrive with time to spare, since transactions stop at closing. Both applicants must appear together in person to sign.

  1. Fill out the online marriage application and save your transaction number.
  2. Gather a non-expired ID for each applicant and any required documents.
  3. Visit the Belton, Killeen, or Temple office together with the transaction number.
  4. Both applicants sign the license in front of the clerk.
  5. Pay the fee by cash, card, money order, or cashier's check; personal checks are not taken.
  6. Wait out the 72-hour period unless you qualify for a waiver, then marry within 90 days.

The 72-hour wait can be waived three ways. A district judge can sign an order. A Twogether in Texas premarital education certificate waives it too. Active military members with a military ID also skip the wait. If you divorced within the last 30 days, you need a court order that waives the 30-day rule before a new license can be issued.

Bell County Marriage and Divorce Fees

Marriage fees are set and easy to confirm. Divorce fees are different. The court charges a filing fee that the District Clerk sets, and certified copy costs follow the clerk fee schedule, which the county links but does not fully post online. Confirm the current divorce filing and copy amounts with the clerk before you pay. The marriage figures below come straight from the County Clerk.

ItemAmount
Marriage license$66
Marriage license with Twogether in Texas certificate$6
Informal (common-law) marriage license$31
Marriage license with hostile fire zone military ordersWaived
Certified copy of recorded marriage license$3 per copy
Divorce filing and certified decree copySet by District Clerk; confirm current amount

Note: personal checks are not accepted for marriage license fees or certified copy requests, so bring cash, a card, a money order, or a cashier's check.

Recording the Executed Marriage License

A signed license is not the end of the process. After the ceremony, the executed license must be recorded. It has to be hand delivered to the County Clerk's Office at 1201 Huey Road in Belton by the person who performed the ceremony, or by a designee. Once it is recorded, the clerk tells the couple to pick up the original.

Take care with the document. The clerk is not responsible for a license lost in the mail or by a carrier. If a license is lost, misplaced, or destroyed, you must buy a new one. It cannot be backdated. So the safest route is hand delivery, then a quick pickup once the record is filed.

Getting Certified Copies in Bell County

You need a certified copy, not a plain printout, for most legal and government uses. For a recorded marriage license, the County Clerk charges $3 per certified copy. You can order online through Permitium, or send a mail request. Mail goes to the Bell County Clerk's Office, Attn: Vital Records, P.O. Box 480, Belton, TX 76513. Include a photo ID for the card holder if you pay by card, and remember that personal checks are not accepted.

For a certified divorce decree, the request goes to the District Clerk instead, since the court holds the case file. The online vital records portal handles marriage, birth, death, and similar documents.

Order certified copies through the Bell County Permitium portal for marriage and other vital records.
